Protecting our kid’s body image in aesthetic sports

The way our dance teachers and coaches talked to us about our bodies and food was unacceptable. In many cases it was psychologically scarring. So how do we feel anything but terrified letting our kids get involved in these beloved, yet risky activities?

Let’s navigate this together.

This virtual workshop will take place on Zoom from 12pm-1pm Eastern Standard Time. Recordings will be available the next day.

Participation in sports can be one of the most positive influences in our children’s lives. AND…appearance pressures from sports — aesthetic sports in particular - can lead to unintended, devastating consequences for body image, disordered eating, and overall psychological health and wellbeing.

Join me for a practical and frank conversation about how to honor our kid’s passions and creativity, advocate for their safety, reduce risk for disordered eating and eating disorders, and get a little healing for ourselves.

This workshop is for you if…

  • You know first hand how brutal dance teachers and coaches can be and you want better than you had for your kid

  • You want to learn how to scope out the emotional safety of your kid’s studio, gym, rink etc… and advocate for your kid’s wellbeing

  • You want your kids to reap the positive benefits of movement

  • Your kid wants to participate, but you’ve been reluctant to let them out of (understandable!) caution

  • You want to know what to do and say if you suspect your child’s relationship to food and/or body is already in trouble

  • You want to know how to nurture your child’s creativity and love of movement without damaging their body image and relationship with food

  • You want to know how (and when) to compassionately counsel them away from a sport that isn’t working for their body anymore
